Refined Coconut Oil

Refined coconut oil is used world wide just because of its purity. Refined coconut oil is also known as refined bleached and deodorized coconut oil (RBD).

Its origin:

Refined coconut oil is extracted from copra. Copra is the dried coconut kernels. Copra is prepared through sun drying or smoke drying. The coconut oil which is derived from copra is unrefined and it is not good for consumption so it must go through the purification process to make coconut oil refined.

Refining process:

Refining process is done by using the physical removal method and refining method. The extraction is done by drying the copra. When the copra is dried it is pressed at 110-125 degree so as to extract the oil.

Then the oil is filtered to get finished oil. After this it will go through the next method, which is RBD method. In this method the filtered oil is:

  • Refining of oil by adding citric acid.
  • Then it is bleached by adding charcoal (activated).
  • Add diatomaceous earth before flittering process as in the form of aid.
  • After this oil is deodorized by means of steam as well as vacuum technique.

All the catalysts are acting as an aid as they are excluded during the time of processing and are not present in the refined coconut oil.
